Vintage Jewelry: Victorian 12kt yellow gold amethyst promise or engagement ring. Size 8.25 (resized from original ring), 2.68 grams. This has a 4mm wide band with engraved shoulders. The stone 6 prong-set and is a rectangular lavender amethyst stone that sits high on the finger at 6mm to the top of the stone. The stone extends beyond the band and is 19mm by 7 mm. There is an inclusion on the inside top of the stone that looks like a drag line perhaps from being cut too fast but there is a tiny chip on the edge - not easily seen unless under magnification. This is not marked in any way. It acid tests positive highly at 10kt and lightly at 14kt and did not change for over 15 minutes of acid testing. It is therefore likely to be 12kt gold which was used often in this time period. There are some marks on the band that look more from when it was resized - more of a heat mark than of what you see with gold filled jewelry - there is no chipping - just the few discolored areas. They are not visible when worn. I do believe this was resized as many rings from that period are smaller than a size 8 and it would make sense that is where the marks came from. (Win.3.1216.4X)
Victorian promise rings were very common and used to declare feelings between two people. Amethyst is a gem too used for happiness, love, peace, affection, satisfaction, contentment. It was also used to give strength in certain situations.
In these earlier rings gold content was not made standard until the first decade of the 1900s. When older pieces are acid tested you often get ranges in gold depending on who made it and were it was made and the alloys used were not standard.
Unfortunately, international sales on this piece must be by priority so it can be tracked and insured.
